A carefully considered internal renovation and garage conversion that transformed this Whitstable home creating a bright, open-plan living space with a dedicated home office.
Spacemaker Architects were appointed to explore how this Whitstable home could be adapted to better suit modern family living. Rather than extending the property, the design focused on making smarter use of the existing space through internal reconfiguration and the conversion of an underused garage.
The brief was to create a large open-plan kitchen, dining and living area, improve the flow through the ground floor, and provide a dedicated home office while retaining the character and practicality of the existing house.
The existing layout separated the kitchen and dining areas, limiting the connection between key family spaces. Our proposals opened up these rooms to create a bright, sociable kitchen, dining and living environment centred around a new kitchen island.
The redesigned layout relocated the kitchen to make better use of the available space and introduced a new utility room beneath the staircase. Existing circulation areas were rationalised to provide improved storage and a more efficient entrance sequence.
The result is a home that feels significantly larger and more connected without increasing its footprint.
With home working becoming an important part of everyday life, the client also wanted to create a dedicated workspace.
The existing garage was transformed into a comfortable home office through the addition of insulation to the walls, floor and roof, alongside new glazing and improved thermal performance. The conversion was carefully designed to integrate with the main house while providing a quiet and practical place to work.
